New Escapologist

New Escapologist Issue 19 just dropped, as did a tenth-anniversary edition of Escape Everything!

My novel, Tether, can be seized upon here. 💛 It was described by Reggie Chamberlain-King, author of The Black Dreams, as “A very personal, very open, very moving book. I enjoyed it. But I was also thrilled that it was short.”

I also helped to publish Jesus My Boy by John Dowie, which now comes arrogantly recommended by one Mr. S. Lee of Stoke Newington.

That’s a lot of stuff you can buy to have a good time with and to help me to stay alive. So why am I still stoney broke? I swear, I don’t buy anything I can’t eat.

Recommendations

Recent reads include Charles Boyle’s Invisible Dogs (2025), Jarett Kobek’s Atta (not “ATTA” as some places stupidly have it, 2011), and Patrick Hamilton’s The Gorse Trilogy (1951-55). I’d recommend any of them, though if you haven’t read Hamilton before I’d start with Hangover Square or his famous film Rope.

I’m currently reading Life Among the Savages (1953), a charming memoir by Shirley Jackson. She once wrote this masterpiece opening paragraph to the world’s best story about a haunted house:

No live organism can continue for long to exist sanely under conditions of absolute reality; even larks and katydids are supposed, by some, to dream. Hill House, not sane, stood by itself against its hills, holding darkness within; it had stood so for eighty years and might stand for eighty more. Within, walls continued upright, bricks met neatly, floors were firm, and doors were sensibly shut; silence lay steadily against the wood and stone of Hill House, and whatever walked there, walked alone.

I’m also reading Lint by Steve Aylet, which is differently remarkable:

The play was made quite famous by a headline misprint in Variety reading OBSCENE PLAY ATTRACTS MASSIVE CROW.

Twin Peaks Season 3 Episode 8, known as “Gotta Light?”, is deliciously weird and I was lucky enough to see it in the cinema recently. It can be watched independently of the rest of the series and can be watched (by design really) at home.
